Festuca arizonica (Arizona Fescue)
Festuca arizonica (Arizona Fescue)
Festuca arizonica, Arizona Fescue extremely similar to Idaho fescue in behavior, size, forage quality, appearance. But rather superb drought tolerance and less cold tolerant. Does not tolerate trampling.
Tolerating part shade and extreme heat makes it an extremely versatile grass for erosion control, and pioneer plantings for weed suppression. It has been found to recover quickly from fire, especially in ponderosa forests after monsoons. Found mainly in the higher elevations of the four corner states. A preferred forage of bighorn sheep. Cover, nesting material, seeds for small birds.
Would be a nice meadow grass or ornamental for Wasatch Front, Southern and Central Utah, most of Nevada.
Plant 1/4"-1/2" deep in the Fall unless you're able to irrigate while it establishes. Requires a minimum of 10 in. annual precipitation, 14 is preferred.
Primary Uses: erosion control, reclamation, meadows, ornamentals
