Clematis hirsutissima (Hairy Clematis) 10 Seeds
Hairy Clematis aka Sugarbowls are a very unique and whimsical wildflower of The West. The large, bell-shaped flowers are formed with a single flower per stem, which in favorable conditions, each plant can produce well over a dozen stems. The stems have red color that complement the vibrant green foliage and deep purple, violet, blue-violet flowers that as the common name suggests, seem to be dusted with sugar. After which, long and feathery fruits remain atop the stems, like little puffballs. Stems rise some inches above the foliage, they are short and stout while grown in full sun, and more vine like when grown in woodland ecotypes, using trees and shrubs to reach over a foot long, but still less vine like than other clematis species.
It's found in dry areas, where some moisture tends to be more present from creeks, rivers or wet meadows or in a woodland setting using other plants for shelter and support, such as snowberry, quaking aspen, pines and sagebrush.
Best planted in at least 6 hours of full sun for the most and best blooms. But will tolerate all day filtered shade, or maybe even full shade.
Early blooming, somewhat deer resistant, large attractive flowers, xeric in its native range.
Cold stratify for 90-120+ days then sow in pots or desired location.
