Achillea millefolium, Western Yarrow is a long-lived flowering perennial that starts blooming in April and doesn't stop until it's time for snow again, we regularly have Yarrow blooming in snowstorms. Yarrow has been used for thousands of years for a wide spectrum of medicinal purposes, we are unfamiliar with these and recommend you do your own research. It can be considered aggressive, especially where it isn't native but in a healthy wild yard or garden it does not outcompete other established vegetation. It is also easy to remove/control if kept from seeding. Hardy in zones 3-9
Tolerates and often prefers poor, rocky and sandy soils but enjoys loam and compost also. It has extreme cold, heat and drought tolerance, needs no supplemental water if started from seed in the fall. Most often found in dry sage steppe into dry forest floors, such as foothill Ponderosa or Oak stands. But is found in almost ecotypes of the intermountain West. Once established this requires no irrigation and will also tolerate poor, rocky soil.  It is also fire resistant with low ignitability and can be used as a fire break in native and permaculture yards.

Western Yarrow is an excellent choice for xeriscapes, meadows, cuttings, pollinator gardens, dry shade, groundcover, edible yards or mass plantings. It has pretty fern like foliage which is a nice contrast the dry plants that grow throughout the Mountain West. Foliage and blooms are aromatic and repel mosquitos. Growing around 12-18" tall it can turn into a small creeping shrub, stay as a specimen ornamental, or morph into a walkable groundcover. Which we recommend buying seeds for and using similar to grass. Excellent cold, heat and drought tolerance, high deer resistance.

Yarrow is also an excellent groundcover or lawn replacement, mixing Yarrow with Sheep Fescue gives a nice full lawn that's completely native and provides food for pollinators. It is also drought tolerant and will stay green throughout the summer with minimal to zero irrigation depending on location. Handles trampling as well as a normal lawn would and can be mowed regularly if you're still going for a traditional lawn look. We recommend mowing once after the plants seed to keep the lawn 'full' or don't mow at all.
