Steer's head is a perennial, herbaceous forb that blooms not longer after the snow melts, usually towards the end of buttercup season. Found tucked next to rocks and spreading slowly into a low groundcover. Best used for increasing biodiversity and the amount of early season flowers for pollinators. A valuable plant for bumblebees in the early Spring.
Enjoys sunny, rocky hillsides in scattered populations across the foothills of the West. These bloomed early for the species, on East facing hill around 7,000 ft. in Wasatch County. Found in sage-steppe on the edge of aspen forest with astragalus, opuntia, and violas.
Start in late Fall or Winter with 90 days cold-moist stratification then sow 1/8" deep to surface, or start outside at the same time and depth.
