Commonly known as Dusky or Whipple's Penstemon, it's celebrated for its graceful appearance and showy wide-tubular flowers that are a deep, saturated violet and appear to be sugar-coated.
This wildflower is found in a wide variety of habitats, ranging from mountain meadows to rocky slopes, and coniferous forests. Blooms late Spring through Summer depending in location.
Growing 12 to 24 inches, with a compact and somewhat bushy growth habit, quite similar to Firecracker Penstemon. Its upright stems are lined with alternating lance-shaped leaves, creating an attractive, well-structured plant.
As with most Penstemon the flowers attract pollinators of all kinds, mainly bees and hummingbirds.
Dusky Penstemon is more tolerant of higher precipitation zones than most other native-to-Utah Penstemon but still requires well-draining soil. Thrives in full sun to part shade, has extreme cold tolerance and moderate drought tolerance. Prefers rocky soil and higher elevations and can tolerate almost full shade.
Cold-moist stratify 90 days then sow in pots or desired location. Or plant outside late Fall to Early Winter. Cover lightly with sand.
