Shortstem buckwheat is vibrant and extremely variable plant, sometimes mat forming sometimes not. This variety is mat forming with some of the plants being over 14 inches wide, and can be planted into rock walls, hanging gardens, etc.
Bright canary-yellow flowers that are a slightly deeper yellow than Sulphur Buckwheat, E. umbellatum, and tint red as they dry. Long narrow leaves following long woody stems. Exceptionally hardy and drought tolerant.
Best planted in hot, full sun. This plant requires excellent drainage and will not tolerate being over watered. These were found growing on South and West facing cliffs ledges. Often growing alongside, Stemless Evening Primrose, Rubber Rabbitbrush, Basin Big Sagebrush and Utah Milkvetch in Juniper-Grassland communities.
One of the latest blooming buckwheats, and plants overall. Definitely the last plant or two showing color in lower Summit Co. well into October and slightly November.
As with all Eriogonum, this is an outstanding pollinator plant, especially given how late in the season it blooms.
Cold-moist stratify for 30 days then sow in pots or desired location OR plant outside late fall to early Winter. Just before snow is best. Bury seed as deep as its widest dimension.
