Gaillardia aristata (Blanketflower)
Gaillardia aristata (Blanketflower)
Blanketflower aka Perennial Blanketflower or Indian Blanket is a bulletproof perennial that blooms on the first year. Native to the Rocky Mountains, East to Minnesota and West to the Cascades -- it has excellent cold, heat, and drought tolerance - all while being a pollinator magnet.
Blanketflower is an excellent choice for native, no maintenance beauty. It's presence really shines in the heat of the summer when most other flowers have finished blooming, and the Autumn blooms have yet to start -- this is when the pollinators won't leave it alone.
The blooms are beautifully vivid - bright red in the center contrasting with bright yellow around the edge. With a bit of regular deadheading, each plant will bloom from May into snowy weather. Best incorporated into a meadow or thick planted native landscape, Blanketflower still work great a specimen/border plant if trimmed and pinched often in the early season.
Blanketflower is one of the hardiest wildflowers you could plant. It will thrive in sweltering sun, in compacted rocky soil, through freezes, and all kinds of general neglect. Extremely drought tolerant! Great for borders, meadow mixes, cut flower. Spring Seeding is best but Autumn plantings work well too.
