Festuca idahoenis, Idaho Fescue;

Is a good choice for a drought tolerant, ornamental grass. Idaho Fescue is less drought tolerant than Sheep Fescue. It has moderate shade tolerance and excellent cold tolerance. Often associated with open ponderosa stands, lodgepole, mountain brome, geranium, and aspens. But is found in an extremely wide variety of habitats throughout the Intermountain West. Idaho Fescue is recommended for higher elevation, cooler areas, especially north facing hillsides where it can control erosion without supplemental water.

This medium height bunchgrass grows 12-36 inches tall and is beautiful as an ornamental or in small stands throughout the yard, it looks particularly nice in xeriscapes with sheep fescue, sagebrush and your preference of wildflowers. It does best in areas with at least 14 inches of annual precipitation, and is an excellent choice for native yards, lawn replacement, meadow mixes, wildlife and domestic livestock. Deer and elk love it in the spring, and it's one of my preferred forage choices for guineas, chickens, turkeys.

Late fall plantings are also best, but you can germinate/plant at most times of the year. Idaho Fescue starts to green up in March and April and matures by mid-summer. Plant 1/2 inch deep or less. Hardy in zones 4-8.
