Giant Blazingstar aka Smooth-stem Blazingstar, Mentzelia laevicaulis is a tall sometimes shrubby wildflower. The large star-shaped flowers can be 5" wide and vary from bright yellow to golden, always conspicuously beautiful in the hot, harsh, dry and rocky areas they prefer to grow in.
Found throughout most Western States, except Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. It is a biennial or short-lived perennial. Adaptable to many conditions, though with its deep taproot it's best suited to xeric conditions and fast draining soil. With such a large distribution it also attracts a large variety of pollinators including moths, bees, flies, butterflies, etc.
An Excellent choice for rock gardens, roadsides, pollinator gardens, and poor soils.
