Rudbeckia occidentalis (Western Coneflower) 30 Seeds
Western Coneflower, Rudbeckia occidentalis also known as the Green Wizard, they are unique by having no petals, just these chocolate cones atop a ring of leafy bracts on 2-6' tall stems. They simply skip the production of classic ray flowers, instead forming only hundreds of tiny florets on the cone itself that gather bees en mass. This will attract most pollinators but is favored particularly by bees.
Like most native wildflowers, these are best sown in the fall after the first freeze to germinate in the spring. They will grow happily in full sun as well as under a filtered shade canopy with well-drained soil. Most commonly found in woodlands, forest edges near sage steppe, seeps and meadows around 4,000-9,000'.
Blooms in the Summer from June to August, the cones will last through Fall while birds perch atop the cones eating the seeds.
These are an excellent choice for meadowscapes, pollinator gardens, cut flowers, woodland/wildlife yards, planting along walkways or mass planting. Growing up to 6' tall and 36" wide, they will provide dozens of chocolate cones that pollinators can't resist.
Plant along a shady fence or wall, or amongst willows and cottonwoods for a fully natural, woodland look. Hardy to zones 3-9. Prefers part to full shade shade in the warmer zones
