Known as Sulphur Paintbrush, Northern Painted Cup, Pale Painted Cup, and Northern Yellow Paintbrush. It is a native perennial wildflower/forb that enjoys full to part sun and cool summer weather. It tolerates heat and drought but is generally found is moister locations than most other Castilleja, regardless of elevation. Basically, an intermediate water preference that sits between linariifolia, chromosa, flava, and miniata, minor. I would still think septentrionalis prefers more moisture than applegatei, pulchella and rhexiifolia.
Extremely hardy to wind and frigid temps, they also tolerate poor, salty-sandy and rocky soil. Resist deer but not livestock.
Blooms in May and will continue to bloom through September at higher elevations or with mid-day shade and a little extra water. It's common habitat in Utah is around 7,000-9,000 ft. in sagebrush meadows, dense hillsides, and wooded areas relatively close to running water.
These are an excellent choice for xeriscapes, pollinator gardens, rock/crevice gardens, native yards and mass plantings. Growing up to 18" tall, usually shorter unless planted with sagebrush and receives supplemental irrigation.
Plant as a meadow component, in a rock/crevice garden, or with some sagebrush and native grasses to watch it really take off. Paintbrushes are hemiparasitic and thrive when planted with other native species; grass and sagebrush are what we see them associated with most often.
These are sensitive plants. It is best to sow the seeds outdoors in the Fall to Early Winter. Otherwise, 90 day cold-moist OR 30 day after a vigorous rub between your hands,
