Castilleja applegatei var. pinetorum (Wavy Leaf Indian Paintbrush) 10 Seeds
Castilleja applegatei var. pinetorum. Known as Wavy Leaf Paintbrush, Applegate's Paintbrush, Wavy Pine Paintbrush, or Martin's Paintbrush, it is a native perennial wildflower that enjoys lots of sun and cool summer weather. It tolerates heat and drought well but will stay smaller in size.
Wavy Leaf Paintbrush has slightly sticky wavy leaves with a rich red, much deeper than Wyoming or Split leaf. Smaller flowers that aren't as prominent as other Castilleja species are hidden behind the deep red bracts and attract unique pollinators.
Extremely hardy to wind and frigid temps, they also tolerate poor, salty-sandy and rocky soil. Resist deer but not livestock.
Blooms in May and will continue to bloom through September at higher elevations or with mid-day shade and a little extra water.
These are an excellent choice for xeriscapes, pollinator gardens, rock/crevice gardens, native yards and mass plantings. Growing up to 30" tall, usually shorter unless planted with sagebrush and receives supplemental irrigation.
Plant in or along a gravel pad, rock/crevice garden, or with some sagebrush and native grasses to watch it really take off. Paintbrushes are semi-parasitic and thrive when planted with other native species; grass and sagebrush are what we see them associated with most often.
There are 5 varieties of Wavy Leaf Paintbrush, two native to Utah. This is the pinetorum variety, usually found in sagebrush steppe, and open coniferous forests up to 12,000 ft. Excellent choice for pollinator, native, and wildlife gardens, drought tolerant and late blooming. Pinetorum is listed as imperiled in Wyoming. Hardy to zones 3-8.
